So, the hero text on your website says that you’re reinventing toothpaste. I’m excited because today we’re talking to Lindsay McCormick, founder and CEO at Bite Toothpaste. You can place an order, and learn more at Bite Toothpaste Bits: / Lindsay shares some practical ways that she uses to keep her mentally and physically well. And I think that it's a testament to the amount of people who are looking for more sustainable products and looking for companies that are truly walking the walk with those kind of products.Balancing profitability, customer experience, and sustainability is a large task. So it's very humbling and exciting to start from something so small and so big and certainly something that's now bigger in a sustainable world. ![]() And we've just grown to the point where it feels it's a business now. And since then, we have now two warehouses, a number of manufacturers. So, yeah, it started with $6,000 in savings in my living room. ![]() So we've been able to stay very, very true to our mission. Because it means that we can continue to make- putting the planet and people first and not have to worry about reporting to investors or anything like that. LINDSAY MCCORMICK: It's been- I feel so lucky and fortunate to be able to bootstrap the way that we have been. What's it like to build a business off the ground like this, and especially coming off of that whole "Shark Tank" viral episode? You started- you bootstrapped this business with, I think it was $6,000 in savings. Well, let me ask you about your background, then. JARED BLIKRE: Toothpaste for the 21st century, I like that. So we've kept it really close to us for now. And the way that we were able to learn about these things is just having that relationship. Like, one of the products that just came out with, which was the first and only plastic free whitening system, was a direct response from our customer. And it's just really important for us to have that direct dialogue with our customer. So your first order comes in a glass jar and then composatible refill pouches after that. We are primarily a subscription business. LINDSAY MCCORMICK: Yeah, so for us, we're just available in the US. How are you marketing your product and getting it into new areas and new international markets if you're even trying to go there? JARED BLIKRE: Well, and I wonder if you have any partnerships with- I was just mentioning brick and mortar stores, but them. So with the new interest in products that are made in the US, things that are better for our bodies and kind of understanding the connection between our actions and the planet, we've been opened up to a whole new customer base, just because more people are buying online before than ever before and more people are thinking about what they're putting in their bodies and what their products are doing to the planet than ever before as well. LINDSAY MCCORMICK: You know, for us, we've been incredibly fortunate with the circumstances because we are an online business. But how have you seen sales and your customer trajectories change over time? And thinking probably not yours as much as others because it's not like you have a brick and mortar presence. ![]() JARED BLIKRE: Well, I want to ask how you've done with sales over the pandemic because it changed a lot of businesses. It had to be beautiful on your vanity because you can make the most sustainable product in the world, but if people don't get excited about it, if they don't want to purchase it, it's not going to do a lot of good. LINDSAY MCCORMICK: Yeah, so something that was super important to us is that we wanted to make a product that was better for the planet and better for our bodies, but didn't feel like you were compromising anything. I've used these products a few times over the years. JARED BLIKRE: Well, I want to talk to you about your teeth whitening system. They're a toothpaste tablet that come in glass jars with compostible refill pouches, aimed at getting rid of the 1 billion plastic toothpaste tubes that end up in our landfills and our oceans. And I was seeing the plastic pollution and- you know, washing up on the beaches, washing up on my board. Before that, I was working as a surf instructor actually right out here. And we ended up having a video go totally viral. So I started Bite in my living room in 2018.
